If the only conditioner in your haircare kit is a wash-out one, it’s time to add leave-in conditioners to your arsenal. Like regular conditioners, leave-in treatments can boost manageability, improve shine, and increase softness, but they differ in the intensity of care they provide. While many of the best leave-in conditioners do all of the above, they go one step further: because they’re not rinsed off, they lock in deep-down hydration for hours, detangle, and provide ongoing thermal and UV protection.

“Leave-in conditioners work in different ways to rinse-out conditioners,” says Michael Lendon, creative director at Aveda. “By leaving product in the hair, you get additional benefits, such as heat protection, smoothness and more shine.”

When it comes to selecting the best leave-in conditioner for your hair type, look for the type of benefits you’re after. For better hydration, look for ingredients like nourishing shea butter or hyaluronic acid, while proteins and amino acids will help build strength if your hair has been damaged by too much styling or processing.

To give you a helping hand, we’ve handpicked some of the best leave-in conditioners out there. Read on to discover more.

Can you use a leave-in conditioner every time you wash your hair?

Leave-in conditioners are a great option if you need more intensive conditioning, and the same goes if you wash your hair every day. “Yes, and I would recommend doing this; that way you are really going to see and feel the benefit from it,” says Lendon. Equally, if your hair is fine or only needs a more intensive dose of hydration and detangling once in a while, then continue with your regular conditioner and opt for a leave-in formula every week or so when it needs an extra boost.

What ingredients should you look for in a leave-in conditioner?

With so much choice available, the ingredient options are endless. For a clear steer, take a look at the benefits and go on what your hair needs, whether that’s extra hydration, shine, bond repair or deep detangling. “It depends on what you would like out of your leave-in conditioner,” advises Lendon. “For us at Aveda, we fill our leave-in conditioners with lots of superfoods. For Botanical Repair Strengthening Leave-In Treatment, we have a macro green blend of certified avocado, green tea and sacha inchi seed oils to smooth and seal the cuticle. This helps to detangle, prevent breakage and eliminate frizz. It also includes a plant-based complex of corn, coconut and sand ginger. For our Nutriplenish Leave-In Conditioner, we have a complex of organic pomegranate seed oil and sand ginger to help revitalise dull, dry hair by adding hydration and helping to protect hair from the drying effects of the sun.”

Are leave-in conditioners suitable for all hair types?

“Leave-in conditioners are suitable for all hair types,” says Lendon. “We actually tend to call them leave-in treatments because they all have different benefits, so at Aveda we have a total of nine leave-in treatment conditioners suitable for all different hair types. It’s really important you find the right one for your hair type.”

How should you apply a leave-in conditioner?

“A leave-in conditioner should be applied to wet hair after shampooing and conditioning,” says Lendon. “Using roughly a five-pence-sized amount, distribute through your hair with your hands first and then run it through the ends all the way up to the top of the hair. That should help to detangle, give you heat protection and all the additional benefits of a leave-in conditioner. Finish by combing through and styling the hair. You can build up your styling products on top of the leave-in conditioner.”
