Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have been prime purveyors of minimalism at The Row. This stripped-back mindset is not only reflected in their ready-to-wear offerings, but across every aspect of their business. Unlike other brands that build strategies around who’s seated on the front row and the “content” they take, there has been a no phone policy at The Row’s shows in recent seasons – the clothes have taken centre stage.
“Because their clothes speak for themselves, and are worn by grown-up models of an age or thereabouts of the women who buy them, there is no need for the usual razzmatazz of a show,” Sarah Mower wrote in her Vogue Runway review of Resort 2027. Indeed, the minimalist autumn dresses that featured spoke for themselves. The second look showed the power of a little black dress – the simple boat-neck, knee-length style delivered just as much of an impact as the very un-minimalist pop-of-blue dress that arrived 23 looks later. Another stand-out look from the collection is a Tippex-white draped bed sheet midi-dress that was styled with a string of pearls and milk-hued pumps.

The industry’s designer cohort has generally moved on from the “quiet luxury” mood that dominated a few years ago, but there are several minimalist heavyweights that will always champion subtlety and simplicity. Jil Sander, Calvin Klein and Toteme are three such brands that consistently find clever ways to alter traditional silhouettes or finishes. Many looks at Jil Sander focused on the back this season, exemplified by a black dress that splayed open, with cascading pieces of fabric rippling on either side – sexy with a whisper rather than a shout.
