It takes a lot for a new or trending denim style to become a “classic”. The pieces we consider staples are steadfast in their reliability: straight-leg, wide-leg, slim, flared and cropped shapes are considered the denim greats, and have been for some time. So, it’s somewhat unexpected that the once-divisive barrel-leg silhouette has managed to stick around as a modern staple.

In recent years, the rise of what might be described as “fashion denim” – pieces centred around directional silhouettes – has shaken things up. Today, you’d be hard pressed to find a denim line-up that doesn’t offer some bold, sculptural silhouettes – including the barrel-leg – among its core offering.
Looser than a straight-leg style, but more sculptural than your average baggy jean, the barrel-leg (otherwise known as a “horseshoe” jean) is defined by its slightly unusual and off-kilter cut. The leg curves outward through the hip and thigh before tapering toward the ankle, creating a distinctive arc that delivers an architectural feel.
Though the shape is nothing new – Rei Kawakubo has been designing similar architectural styles at Comme Des Garçons since the ’90s – the denim interpretation caught the industry’s attention in 2023 thanks to Alaïa’s autumn/winter show. In the seasons following, barrel-leg silhouettes swiftly filtered from the runway into designer, contemporary and high-street collections.

Powerhouse denim brands including Citizens of Humanity and Agolde have all seen success with bubble-like barrel shapes. “The horseshoe feels a bit sculptural, but still has the ability to look relaxed and sophisticated. It references vintage styles, yet feels modern,” Marianne McDonald, creative director at Citizens Of Humanity, previously told of why this shape feels particularly relevant for now. “It’s a divisive style, though, and when it was first posted on Instagram, people had very strong opinions. That’s when we realised we had a bestseller on our hands!”
It’s also evolved into a permanent fixture at many retailers, rivalling the popularity of classic straight- and wide-leg cuts. Styled with shirting, a ribbed knit or a T-shirt, the silhouette feels progressive yet wearable. Plus, the slightly-cropped length means it works well with almost any shoe; from ballet flats to kitten heels, loafers and trainers.
If you want a style that feels particularly structured, look for selvedge which is woven on vintage looms that create a tighter, denser weave – and avoid stretch, if you can. Or, if you prefer a more streamlined silhouette, there are a number of barrel-leg jeans that have only a slight gradient (Toteme and Whistles, for example, are very wearable).
Regardless, a barrel leg makes it look like you’ve made an effort in a way other cuts don’t. Keep reading for ’s edit of the best barrel-leg jeans to shop now, from Alaïa’s signature style to an accessibly-priced alternative from Cos.
