The summer dresses have been stashed at the back of the wardrobe, but it’s not quite big coat season yet. We are firmly in transitional wardrobe territory, which means it’s time to tackle the question of what to wear when you’re turning off and actually leaving the house. Happily, the runways were awash with jacket inspiration this season, with everything from ladylike tweed to practical rain ponchos popping up in the collections.
Below, six runway-approved jacket styles to steal from the spring/summer 2027 collections.
Relaxed leather

A leather jacket is always a good investment. Take your cues from Nicolas Ghesquière, who knows a thing or two about the perfect leather jacket. He was renowned for his signature motorcycle jackets during his tenure at Balenciaga (if you don’t already have alerts set for Ghesquière-era Balenciaga leather jackets on Vestiaire Collective, might we suggest you rectify that now), and he sent slim-fitting versions down his most recent Louis Vuitton runway.
Worn with low-slung skirts and nothing underneath, the classic Chanel jacket felt less prim and proper for spring/summer 2027 than it has in the past, reimagined as the ultimate aspirational must-have for every woman, regardless of age or personal style. As Daniel Rodgers observed last season, having noted how British editors were swapping their bombers for Chanel: “Traditionally associated with the prim, tea-sipping ladies of Claridge’s, those tweed suits have taken on a newfound lightness since Matthieu Blazy’s joyous spring/summer 2026 debut.”
Granny jacket redux

At Valentino, models appeared to have raided a very glamorous pensioner’s wardrobe for jewel-toned jackets. Alessandro Michele’s more-is-more approach is surprisingly easy to adopt – a structured jacket in a very ’80s shade is a good place to start, and a strong shoulder is key.
Traditional tweed

Who remembers the viral miniskirt of spring/summer 2022? Things have gotten a little more practical – and covered-up – since then: Miu Miu’s spring/summer 2027 show was a love letter to sensible dressing in true Mrs Prada style. Those knee-length tartan skirts were paired with tweed jackets. Adding a touch of tweed to your wardrobe will simultaneously nod to the runways, and the imminent return of .
Splash-proof plastic

There were plenty of memorable looks among Chemena Kamali’s boho lace, off-the-shoulder necklines and ’70s silhouettes at Chloé, but the all-important one for autumn was her elevated take on the trusty packaway poncho. Personally, I’m lusting after the yellow or pink version for my own autumn wardrobe.
