At the start of this year, shopping editor Joy Montgomery dubbed satin trousers the minimalist trend to watch for 2026. “Consider the boudoir trouser a welcome reprieve after all the clingy dresses and high hemlines. Yes, they are silken, but they are also long, loose and decidedly relaxed,” she wrote. After appearing en masse on the runways for spring/summer, many of us, myself included, invested in a pair for the summer holidays and city heatwaves that now feel like a distant memory.

But I’m here to tell you that those breezy satin trousers need not be stowed away until warmer weather returns – whenever that may be. In fact, with the right styling, they make a surprisingly convincing autumn trouser, too.
I recently picked up a pair of satin balloon-leg tailored trousers from Whistles, and I’ve already found them to be an excellent transitional piece. The heavyweight satin gives them enough structure to feel substantial rather than flimsy, while the subtle sheen adds something to an otherwise fairly straightforward autumn outfit. I’ve been wearing mine with layered knitwear, a leather jacket and ballet flats as the weather has started to cool.
First things first, consider the cut. Like me, you could opt for a trending balloon-leg silhouette, which brings a little more volume to the inherently fluid fabric. But there are plenty of other iterations to consider, from slim-leg and bootcut styles to cropped capris and classic tailored trousers with front pleats, all cut from gloriously glossy satin. At the more relaxed end of the spectrum, you’ll find drawstring, tie-waist and elasticated styles, which are ideal if comfort is your primary concern, although perhaps less convincing if you’re after something that can pass for tailoring.
As for styling, we looked to the latest crop of street-style for inspiration, but our advice is simple: wear satin trousers much as you would any other pair of trousers. Lean into the fabric’s sheen by balancing its inherently silken finish with the more tactile, substantial textures of autumn, like plush wool, brushed cashmere, supple leather and suede. There’s also something to be said for resisting the temptation to make satin trousers polished. A slouchy jumper, simple T-shirt, leather bomber or pair of lived-in trainers can give them the nonchalant quality that made them so appealing in the first place.
