Historically, the fashion week runways haven’t exactly been known for their, let’s say, approach to styling. And while we’re always here for a McQueenian catwalk spectacle – though the robotic spray-paint arm would have rather more sinister undertones to it now – sometimes you can’t go wrong with beautifully designed clothing styled in a way that one could imagine wearing to, say, the pub, rather than The Grand Palais.
Luckily, things have shifted over the last few years, with many brands recognising the need to balance the artistic with the commercial. Of course, some critics have decried the so-called blandification of the runway (which is, in many cases, warranted), but we have also seen countless creative directors rise to the challenge. Just look at Micheal Rider for Celine, Louise Trotter at Bottega or Matthieu Blazy’s Chanel, all designers who have found ways to deliver wearability without compromising on originality.
Which is why, every season, the Shopping team takes to Runway to screenshot the new-season outfits that we want to recreate in the months ahead. Yes, our proportions aren’t quite as other-worldly as the average catwalk models’, but if you can find a way to look past that, there’s plenty of inspiration to be found – especially if, like us, you’re trying to wean yourself off the sartorial echo-chamber that is Instagram. After all, this is professional stylists being paid to do what they do best.
