After a long reign of puddled hems and generously proportioned silhouettes, fashion’s pendulum has swung. Sure, the fluid drape of recent seasons still has its devotees (Louise Trotter’s most recent Bottega Veneta collection proved as much), but it was the classic 1990s cigarette cut (tailored, leg-lengthening and often anchored to an ankle boot) that dominated moodboards for autumn/winter 2026.
Consider Miu Miu’s full leather look, rounded off with a stompy ankle boot; or Mugler’s tailored stirrup leggings with a sleek burgundy pointed toe and a snuggly shearling jacket. Isabel Marant, meanwhile, offered skinny styles in abundance, cut from denim and cord and styled with zebra-print booties and ankle-height lace-ups. In every case, the slim-cut trouser served as a fast track to polish.
That held true at Victoria Beckham, too, where skinnies were paired with a cosy fair isle knit and flat-soled boots, and at Blazy’s Chanel, where fitted trousers in beige were partnered with a layered knit and signature cap-toes. The resounding feeling was that this is not necessarily a return to the ultra-tight, spray-on jeans of the early 2010s, but a more thoughtful take on the slim silhouette, with tailoring, texture and clever styling making all the difference.
For anyone who has spent the past few years in wide-leg denim and barrel-leg trousers, the prospect of a narrower cut might take some getting used to. But with these outfit formulas, a skinnier fit can easily enter your autumn/winter rotation. See seven runway-inspired ways to wear slim or skinny trousers and ankle boots now.
