This Fashion Month has been all about the skirt, and there was no greater endorsement than at Prada where for spring/summer 2027 Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons worked exclusively with skirts. The collection included 63 ideas for how to style a skirt, without a pair of trousers or a dress in sight. Skirts are, of course, integral to Mrs Prada’s own signature style – she once said “the skirt for me is like a T-shirt.”

When Prada asks us to not wear trousers any more, fashion people listen. As ’s Nicole Phelps wrote in her review of the show – it was a “people pleaser from start to finish, direct and designed to stoke real world desire.” We won’t need to wait until spring for Miuccia’s skirt movement to take hold, however, as the street-style images from outside the spring shows have been very skirt-centric.
When it comes to silhouettes, simple pencil skirts and column skirts (in charcoal, slate or black) have dominated this season, partly because they invite a host of styling options. There was a corporate mood sweeping the autumn/winter 2026 collections, as Chanel and Miu Miu were two houses that took on the challenge of modernising the classic pencil skirt.
It isn’t all boardroom skirts, however, as leather A-line skirts, printed midis and pleated pinafores have also proved popular among guests this season. When styling a skirt for autumn don’t underestimate the power of foundational wardrobe pieces, whether that’s a navy crewneck jumper, a button-down shirt or a leather jacket. Shirts and skirts were an unbeatable double act this fashion month, so much so that one attendee even wore two striped button-downs with her black tiered midi-skirt.
