Love golf? Obsessed with eighties and nineties horror? Then you’ll no doubt want to know about the brand-new crazy golf spot landing in east London. It’s called and it’s opening at the end of October.
Ted’s new London branch at 78 Great Eastern Street in Shoreditch will be its second, after a venue in Oxford – which opened only last month. Both are heavily inspired by americana, cult movies and comedy horror.
The 5,500 square foot location will feature two nine-hole courses populated by giant animatronics, talking gargoyles, six-foot vampire robots, a spooky jack-in-the-box and more. The whole concept is inspired by an eccentric Californian guy called Ted Montgomery who ran a crazy golf course in the 1980s themed on his collection of comedy-horror memorabilia.
The first course, named ‘Bad Bones’, is set in a gothic graveyard. As you pitch and put, there’ll be trash-talking gargoyles, a man-eating Venus flytrap, skeletons, serpents and zombie hands trying to disrupt your play. The other is titled ‘Toy Bites’ and is described as ‘part toyshop, part vampire nightmare’. It’s packed with terrifying mutated toys designed to make it feel like you’ve stepped inside a horror-comedy film.
As well as the golf there’s the Deadbeat Diner, a retro-style bar where players can fill up on cocktails, milkshakes, ice-cream floats, frozen slushies, pizzas, hot dogs and more.
Co-founder Larissa Houghton (who also happens to be a musician) said that she has been particularly inspired by R.L. Stine’s books. She said: ‘Bringing Ted’s to London was always something we wanted to do, but we knew that if we were going to do it, we had to go big. Shoreditch gives us the opportunity to take everything we love about the world we’ve created in Oxford and push it even further.
‘We want people to walk through the doors and immediately feel like they’ve left London behind and stepped into another world. It’s weird, nostalgic, funny, a little bit creepy and completely immersive. There really isn’t anything quite like Ted’s Crazy Golf and we can’t wait for people to see what we’ve been creating.’
