In the world of magazines, there’s often talk of “day to night” dressing. In fact, a friend recently said to me, “I feel like I’ve waited my whole life to go ‘day to night’, but the occasion is yet to arise.” Well I can safely say that, having worked in editorial for over 13 years, I now understand why journalists find themselves reaching for this trope so often. Because, in our line of work, it’s not uncommon to spend the morning at a gym class or PR breakfast, before heading into the office for meetings and maybe the odd store appointment, then finishing the day with a sit-down brand dinner. Barre to bar? Flat white to fine dining? Been there, done that, got the overpriced taxi home.
It perhaps explains why footwear is such a hot topic of discussion on the Shopping desk. After all, cliche of toe-clenchingly high stilettos is a thing of the past – what we really want is shoes that not only look great, but will not make us want to consciously uncouple from our own feet by 5pm. Which is why UGG has long been lauded as the gold-standard for multitasking footwear that delivers on every level.
Naturally, as a Millennial, UGG is a brand I’ve held a soft spot for ever since I pulled on my first pair of miniboots in the mid 2000s – styled with a denim miniskirt and pair of lace-trimmed leggings of course. (IYKYK.) But, in the intervening years, the brand has expanded outside of its shearling boot lineup and leant into more experimental silhouettes, be it the shearling-lined ballet flats, lace-up pumps or minimalist suede clogs.
There are, however, three styles in particular from the brand’s autumn/winter 2026 collection that have caught my eye, and that I have no doubt will instantly elevate my new-season essentials. First up? The Zora Ballet Flat in Sand, which my colleague Mia has been wearing on repeat to the office this summer with cargos and a tank top. Something tells me they’ll be a winner for autumn, too. Next on my list is the Enwrap Clog in Chestnut, which not only looks great with skirts and dresses for transeasonal dressing, but is just what I need to ground slouchy tailoring and denim on cooler autumnal days. Finally, for evening, it’s all about the Quill Mary Jane in Black, which is both sleek and versatile, making it ideal for casual dinners and after-work drinks.
The post-gym flats
I’ve always found it hard to know what to wear with cycling shorts when I’m travelling into the office post-pilates class, especially when the cooler weather takes flip-flops out of the equation. The UGG Zora Ballet Flat, however, takes transitional dressing in its stride with its rounded toe, neutral colourway and shearling-lined finish. Just knot a checked shirt around your waist in case the heavens open – and let’s face it, in the UK it’s a case of not .
The office-ready clogs
When the clog trend hit the shoe circuit, I didn’t need much persuading. It’s a style I’ve championed for years now – particularly during the tricky months of September and October. The UGG Enwrap Clog, however, trumps the rest with its streamlined, unadorned silhouette and subtle platform sole that gives a pair of floor-puddling, wide-leg jeans just the right amount of elevation. For the office, I’ve finished the look with an oversized leather jacket.
The evening shoe
Attending brand dinners is a regular occurrence in my job, however I’ve never been someone who feels completely comfortable in a super dressy get-up. I do, however, want to look suitably polished. Enter: the Quill Mary Jane Trainer. With its subtle square toe, wide strap and panelled black suede upper, the shoe offers a quiet nod to the “sneakerina” trend, but in a way that still feels timeless. They’re just what I need to ground my nylon cropped trousers and favourite vintage mesh top.
