After what felt like a never-ending summer, this week’s sudden drop in temperature has come as something of a shock. But the colder weather brings at least one consolation: the return of denim. Anne Hathaway, for one, is wearing twice as much of it.

The actor’s take on double denim, worn to the opening of Moncler’s Fifth Avenue flagship amid a flurry of New York Fashion Week activity last night, was oversized, bump-baring and anchored by fisherman sandals – a far cry from the Canadian tuxedo’s most infamous outing: Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake’s appearance at the 2001 American Music Awards, and the worst-dressed lists that followed. But then, reappraising the staples of the Noughties seems to have become something of a Hathaway specialty.

After all, it was only a couple of weeks ago that the actor made a case for that classic formula, jeans and a nice top – a look she championed while rising to fame in the early 2000s. So while we’ve grown accustomed to seeing her in Grecian Prada gowns on press tour, deconstructed Versace bodycons for The Devil Wears Prada 2 and futuristic Iris van Herpen creations for , Hathaway seems equally intent on revisiting the more everyday staples of her early career.
