It turns out that socks are a contentious subject. Some people feel a lot stronger than you may think, with very passionate opinions on fabric, colour and texture, while others care very little – or if at all. A couple of years ago, the internet even declared that your sock length can determine your age. Apparently, an ankle sock signals that you’re a Millennial, while a longer, crew sock signals you’re a Gen Z. I’m technically a zillennial – born on New Year’s Eve, on the cusp of the generational line – so where does that leave me? Socks up to the middle of my lateral malleolus, the curved bit on the outside of your ankle?
Having worn everything from trainer socks and knee-highs to those strange, boat-like pop socks (horrible) – M&S calls them “footsies” (double horrible) – I understand the debate. But if we’re talking the best socks for women, I’m a Gen Z through and through.
Truthfully, I never used to be bothered about socks, but these days they’re at the heart of many of my favourite outfit pairings. It might sound strange, but people pay a lot more attention to your sock choice than you might think. Wear a great sock, and it will likely go unnoticed, but wear a rogue or jarring sock and someone will say something.

The trick to steering clear of hosiery embarrassment? Stock up on trusty pairs that you know you can rely on time and again, in shades that complement the rest of your wardrobe. Landing on the “perfect sock” is no mean feat (feet?), but there are a select few brands that specialise in excellent socks that hold just as much practical value as they do style kudos.
“When you keep going back to the same store for one pair of specific socks, even though the store has more to offer, that’s when you know it’s the perfect sock,” Kristina Falke, global head of PR for heritage German brand, Falke (a label that’s beloved by stylists and fashion insiders worldwide), previously told British . “I think that’s the power of an accessory like socks – even if you wear something mainstream, a sock or tights can uplift a pair of shoes or outfit and make it unique.”

Jenni Lee, founder and creative director of loungewear label Comme Si, echoes Falke’s sentiment. “I view socks and shoes as a pairing, so the ‘perfect sock’ is really dependent on its shoe counterpart,” she tells Vogue. Lee’s earliest design focused on the “perfect women’s loafer sock,” the Agnelli, a ribbed style that is lightweight and breathable. “The length hits an inch above the ankle, allowing the wearer to style it taught or slightly scrunched down,” she explains. Since launching in 2019, she has worked with craftspeople in Italy to expand the range, which now features various colourways, weights and lengths, made from cotton, cashmere, silk and merino wool yarns. “We put the same level of care in making socks as you would expect from a fine clothier.”
Pairs is another sock specialist committed to quality, as outlined by the brand ethos: “We believe in the joy of wearing a really good pair of socks. On the high street, Uniqlo is a personal favourite. Though, at a size UK 4, my feet are a little too small for the socks displayed on the retailer’s in-store sock walls (these only go down to a size 5), which feature a vast array of colours, including bright red, racer-green and various neutrals. And the online offering boasts a selection of thicknesses and colours, as well as handy multi-packs.
While the Gen-Z vs. millennial sock discourse takes into account everyday hosiery styles, there’s a different conversation to be had about socks on the runway. Tongue-in-cheek socks have been central to Miuccia Prada’s vision for decades, and for recent collections Ms. Prada has focused on scholarly styles to ground her prim and preppy looks. Prada autumn/winter 2026 positioned sweet, floral-embroidered and pointelle socks centre stage, worn loosely on the leg with vintage-leaning, pointed-toe pumps. And in a similar vein, at Simone Rocha, look-at-me socks were integral to the season’s mood. By contrast, simple black socks provided a backdrop for Celine’s new lace-up jazz shoes.
As for sports socks? That’s another conversation entirely. Back in 2022, I noted how sports socks were the “most affordable accessory of the season”, having observed a rise in the LA It-crowd pushing ribbed collegiate socks as a style statement rather than a purely practical component of their Pilates outfits. (Princess Diana, for one, was a champion of the off-duty, on-trend sock, which she wore with graphic sweaters and cycling shorts.)
