When it comes to accessories, the most versatile pieces are the ones that stand the test of time, and a suede handbag is a worthwhile investment. From fringed, bohemian-leaning iterations in sandy hues to structured styles in rich chocolate tones, a suede bag offers the retro appeal of a treasured heirloom that transcends the seasons.
Suede can often be disregarded for practical reasons – what does one do about rain smudges? – however this season’s toffee totes and olive shoulder bags only benefit from a well-worn patina. Chemena Kamali’s debut collection at Chloé for autumn/winter 2024 is partly responsible for the surge in suede in recent years, as she ushered in a ’70s-inspired Chloé bohemianism, where ruffled dresses were accessorised with merlot, dusty-pink and tan suede slouchy bags. Miu Miu (as always) has also been a driver of this aesthetic, as Arcadie and Aventure bags realised in a plush toffee are a key component of the Miuccia uniform.
Suede is no longer primarily associated with Woodstock-coded tassels and fringing, thanks to polished silhouettes and rich palettes by the likes of Bottega Veneta, Prada and Max Mara. Suede has been key to Matthieu Blazy’s vision for the accessories at Chanel, as the classic flap has been updated in a sandy suede, along with its bowling bag and a crescent-shaped clutch. Kendall Jenner arrived at Venice Film Festival with the maxi Chanel bowling holdall from the cruise 2027 collection, leading ’s Daniel Rodgers to write that there was a “suede bag supremacy” among celebrity attendees at the festival.
While luxury labels such as Saint Laurent, Khaite and Coach have released accessories rendered in suede, there are also a number of smaller independent handbag brands that deserve an honourable mention in this department, too. London-based DeMellier in particular has taken on the big players with its roster of It-bags that all share a timeless aesthetic, positioned as future heirlooms, with chocolate, chestnut and toffee suede being a running theme.
