Every time Alexa Chung leaves the house, styling inspiration follows, whether it’s shot on DoorCam or documented in the latest batch of celebrity sightings. For her latest outing, Alexa took to the sunny streets of Notting Hill wearing Aligne’s George wrap coat, complete with a detachable faux-fur collar. The rest of her off-duty uniform was, by nature, unfussy – straight-leg jeans, black pumps, oversized sunglasses and a slouchy Louis Vuitton monogram bag.

The great British high street has proved fertile ground for Alexa’s styling inclinations of late. Her capsule collection with Reformation was a big hit, and earlier this year, she stepped out wearing a vintage-looking leather jacket, which turned out to be from Mango. Always one for a high-low mix, her latest co-sign of Aligne has got us thinking about the power of a great grey coat.

Indeed, Alexa has long favoured the classic coat style. In September, she attended Jonathan Anderson’s Dior show in Paris wearing an oversized, double-breasted, menswear-inspired wool overcoat with contrasting black lapels, styled with a cotton shirt, jeans and bow-adorned peep-toe sandals. A year earlier, at a London book launch, she opted for a Prada coat, artfully cinched at the waist with an aged studded belt, and further accessorised with patent-leather boots and a Vuitton box bag. Other styles to have made their way into her rotation over the years include belted, cropped, herringbone and single-breasted iterations, often cut from substantial wool.

The autumn/winter 2026 collections offered a convincing case for the grey coat this season. At Jil Sander, the grey coat was decidedly minimalist: single-breasted, slim-line and stripped of unnecessary embellishment, catering to the continued appetite for a ’90s, Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy-coded way of getting dressed.

Miu Miu, meanwhile, took a more playful approach, presenting cropped grey coats with belted empire waistlines. Mini in proportion and more fanciful in their execution, they felt perfectly suited to the Miu Miu girl, who has never been one to let practicality get in the way of a good outfit. Prada, meanwhile, kept things relatively traditional, opting for straight-cut, double-breasted styles, with protruding pink cuffs providing a flash of colour.

It’s no wonder Giorgio Armani experimented with grey tones on his autumn/winter 2026 runway: he literally invented the colour “greige”. Given the everyday allure of his brand codes, pretty much all of the opening looks in his collection featured a particularly persuasive take on the grey coat, whether classically cut, collarless or affixed with a gleaming brooch.
