Once in a while, when scrolling through Phil Oh’s street-style images, an editor is presented with a trend story that writes itself. This season’s standout look came courtesy of one woman: Céline Dion. Because it wasn’t just the Chanel show that press Eurostar-ed to Paris for, it was the Plenitude Arena residency of the ballad doyenne herself. And while last season was fuelled by a frenzy of fans trying to bag Matthieu Blazy’s first double C-dotted pumps, this time around, tees paying homage to the French-Canadian darling scored the highest cool points. The power of merch, and so on.

Scarcely anyone belted out the classics and departed the concert without hitting the kiosk for a “Let’s Talk About Love” or a “Falling Into You” tee. At £40, it was rude not to throw in a cap too. While some stocked up on XL white crew-necks to wear as nighties (hi Julia Hobbs), others (hey José Criales-Unzueta) wore their diva shirts proudly with the wardrobe staples they packed weeks ago when heading out on the road for the spring/summer 2027 shows.

“I was confused at first,” says Criales-Unzueta, who landed on styling the vintage-look tee with pink cargos and a printed shirt that looked “just deranged enough to work”, and was thrilled at the positive response. “I like being a little corny, so I had to wear it in Paris.” As the giddiness of the last presentations and appointments set in, Dion became the unofficial mascot for a season that, at times, failed to meet the high notes the performer herself pulled off on stage.

Similar merch hysteria was recently reached in the Bayeux Tapestry gift shop at The British Museum.

A Céline Dion T-shirt might not be a barometer of luxury style, but it’s emotional. And fashion – the give-you-goosebumps kind – should evoke real feeling. Everyone can remember where they bought that first Kate Moss for Topshop dress, Mulberry Alexa bag, [insert formative product here], and now, show-goers, united over shout-singing “Pour que tu m’aimes” together, will reminisce over that fateful season where, against the odds, one comeback queen had the industry in a chokehold.
