If beauty is in the eye of the beholder, then what determines “comfortable jeans” is in the mind of the wearer. There are the denim stalwarts, who willingly choose Levi’s 501s rather than loungewear for a long-haul flight. Then, there are the people who only reach for their jeans if they have plans or they’re in the office – regarding them an everyday staple, rather than an item worn for relaxation.

Fabrication also plays a big part. Those spun from rigid Japanese selvedge denim, which are stiff until they mould to the shape of a body after breaking them in, aren’t exactly the pinnacle of comfort (they’re not really meant to be). But jeans rendered in forgiving, supple cotton blends are lightweight and therefore pretty wearable – a close yet more elevated counterpart to sweats.
The silhouette, too, is another obvious component of comfortable jeans: naturally, baggy fits give the most relaxed feeling, whereas skinnies can leave behind seam marks on the skin that can make you feel like your circulation is being compromised. Straight-leg jeans with the right amount of give can also deliver comfort, if you just ensure that the waistband isn’t too tight.
Jeans generally become more comfortable over time, since they move and stretch slightly to fit your body. If comfort is what you’re after, then lightweight fabrics will offer more give the more you wear them, but that’s not to say you should dispel heavyweight denim entirely. Even thicker fabrications – especially generously-cut ones – can be comfortable.
