Your wardrobe will naturally shift throughout the year, but winter is the season when the weather dictates your clothing choices the most. For your winter capsule wardrobe, you’ll want a roster of reliable, classic pieces to make getting ready every day so much easier.
Winter dressing is all about clever layering and focusing on high-quality, durable fabrics that will help to protect you against the cold. Luckily, that doesn’t have to mean letting go of directional pieces, such as checked kilts and colourful trainers; incorporating statement pieces into a capsule wardrobe can be the catalyst for countless good looks.
We suggest you invest in those pieces that will get lots of wear – cashmere jumpers, wool coats, knitted scarves and knee-high boots et al. While it’s tempting to reach for the brands and products that boast lower price tags, remember that choosing something with a premium fabric composition – especially during the colder months – will ensure that it lasts for years to come and actually keeps you warm.
Winter capsule wardrobe:
It’s also a good idea to think about which pieces could be sourced from second-hand retailers. For example, a quick browse on Vinted or eBay will lead you to a bounty of leather jackets – many of which will likely have a worn-in quality that new iterations will struggle to imitate. As for tailoring, second-hand sites and menswear sections are a great port of call for unique pieces and oversized silhouettes. Don’t forget that a good tailor can work wonders on a piece that is too big.
It can sometimes feel like a challenge to feel put together in the depths of winter, but these 11 staple items will keep you warm and comfortable, in style.
The go-with-everything knitwear
A high-quality knit is an investment, and while you’ll treasure a neutral-coloured jumper year after year, make sure you don’t forget to check out colour-pop styles from the likes of Cos and M&S. Oversized fits make them look even more luxurious, too.
The long coat
A cashmere or beautiful wool coat is the ultimate investment to your winter wardrobe – the longer and more oversized, the better.
Black leggings
The gym staple was seen across the autumn/winter 2026 collections, at the likes of Celine, Miu Miu, Dries van Noten and Loewe. Not just for “corner-shop styling,” (leggings and a puffer coat are the popped-out-for-milk uniform), capri pants were proposed for party season at Isabel Marant with leather and leopard, black leggings were paired with pointed pumps at Balenciaga and then tucked into riding boots at Hermès.
The wide-leg jeans
Wide-leg jeans – whether they’re horseshoe-shaped, low-slung or high-waisted – pair well with winter layers. We recommend opting for rigid denim to achieve a structured silhouette.
The flat knee-high boots
Take inspiration from the equestrian style that has been dominating for several winters and invest in a pair of flat knee-high boots (buckle detailing optional). Equal parts practical and stylish, they are sure to add polish to dresses, skirts and denim-alike.
The winter skirt
Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons have been PR-ing the skirt of late, as Prada’s spring/summer 2026 collection had a singular focus on this garment, causing trouser loyalists to change allegiance. For autumn/winter they come in a plethora of both statement-making and classic styles that will pair beautifully with your favourite boots: think pleated kilts and pencil skirts.
The polished trousers
Nothing spells elegance quite like a well-fitted pair of tailored trousers – just throw them on with a cashmere knit and loafers and you have a ready-made winter uniform. While wool is a classic option, cord fabrics are also proliferating this year. And remember: don’t hesitate to get them altered if they’re not quite right.
The leather jacket
When chosen well, a good leather jacket will stand the test of time, and while there are plenty of iterations to choose from from – bikers, bombers, blazers etc. – we’re lusting-after oversized silhouettes this season.
The colour-pop scarf
Accessories are so much more than a flourish in winter, as hats, scarves and gloves are your essential armour against the elements. Colour-pop scarves add personality to layers of grey and navy, with red triangle scarves and homespun chunky rainbow styles proving popular this winter.
