It was perhaps unsurprising that, during a sweltering summer, everyone seemed to develop an allergy to closed-toe shoes. New York, London, Milan, Paris… everywhere you looked, there were feet. That said, even the most committed wearer of flip-flops, satin sandals or mesh ballet flats must admit there’s little fun in feeling the heat of the pavement underfoot, no matter how freeing the breeze between your toes.
Shop the shoe:

Dakota Johnson may have found the solution. Enter: the wedge flip-flop. Out and about amid the frenzy of New York Fashion Week, Johnson was photographed yesterday in Jude’s leather Yaga wedge sandals, worn with an LBD – long black dress – from Toteme and Valentino’s Preta Envelope Rockstud bag. That I should find inspiration here isn’t surprising. Deemed “an autumn girl at heart” by British ’s features editor Daisy Jones, Dakota has long been informing my September shopping – all perfect suede jackets and cigarette jeans – so it was only a matter of time before I turned my attention to her shoes.
A longtime advocate for rewearing your favourite items – I’ve seen her in Phoebe Philo’s gathered flats more times than I can remember – Johnson also sported the same sandals the night before with jeans and a bodysuit. Proof, perhaps, that the wedge flip-flop is all you need in your shoedrobe during this transitional season, not to mention a last chance to flash that pedicure before frostbite sets in.
