They’re barely visible (that’s sort of the whole point), and yet we’re seeing “ghost lashes” everywhere at the moment. The trend was set in motion when Zendaya walked the red carpet with ethereal, Athena-esque make-up (courtesy of Ernesto Casillas) at ’s New York premiere, and it’s been cropping up ever since – note the mascara-less models on the runway at McQueen’s homecoming London Fashion Week show on Sunday night. Such is the power of Zendaya.

But this beauty trend isn’t for everyone – it might send a shudder down the spine of those used to accentuating their eyes with a coat (or three) of volumising mascara, for example. Thank heavens for Emilia Clarke, then, who arrived at the McQueen show with enough eyelashes to go around. The actor’s doll-like lashes – lush, dense and thick – were the focal point of her look: a low-key, wispy updo, rosy cheeks, brushed up brows and a nude lip.

As a self-proclaimed “secret hardcore fashion girl”, perhaps Clarke turning away from the “ghost mascara” trend is a sign it’s hitting a saturation point. The Game of Thrones star was among the first to get a glimpse of Glenn Martens’s vision for Maison Margiela – she was on the front row at his debut show last summer. Her lashes stole the show on that occasion, too: falsies popped on her bottom lash line to give a Twiggy effect. Viva la lash!
