Emma Corrin likes to wear Miu Miu knickers to Venice Film Festival. Neon-green suiting. Lilac granny socks and siren-red peep-toe heels. This year’s iteration, which Corrin attended with Cartier, presented a plot twist. “The latest on my look is that I don’t know what I’m wearing because my luggage got lost,” says the actor, mere hours out from the jeweller’s Gritti Palace dinner, celebrating the launch of the Cartier Cinema Club and 10 years of . “It was like a weird dystopian film – a whole plane’s worth of people were watching an empty baggage carousel going round until someone realised none of it was coming.”

No matter. There are boiled eggs (a Corrin breakfast essential before a big event), kiwi fruit (which they have just learnt are a nutrient bomb for cell renewal), and the whole of the floating city to get lost in while their stylist Harry Lambert’s team mobilises to find a look to rival those Miuccia Prada pants. It’s a good job this happened to someone who strikes me as resolutely unflappable and not, say, Kendall Jenner, I chime in. “You’ve got to surrender to it,” adds the 30-year-old Kent-born actor, who thankfully touched down at Marco Polo airport wearing the chicest of all-white Celine ensembles that called back to Princess Diana’s travel style. “When one door closes, another one opens. What I wear tonight might be extraordinary in a way that it wasn’t going to be before.”

Proving that a white tank and jeans is really all you need.

Of course, as a Cartier brand ambassador, Corrin’s look was always going to be extraordinary. (Their Panthère de Cartier 18k white gold, onyx, emerald and diamond earrings and bracelet, hand delivered to their hotel suite, were never going to be a lost luggage risk). “There’s that feeling that you just want to wear all the jewellery,” says Corrin, who is rarely seen without their Trinity ring, which symbolises the bond between them, their mother and their grandmother. “There’s such timelessness about it – plus it’s like having a fidget spinner on your finger.” A tiny whiskey also helps distil any pre-dinner jitters.

Corrin’s fashionably late dinner look – a whisper of a black satin and lace Tom Ford slip – arrived just on time, after British ’s quick fire round of style questions kept Emma suitably distracted. How would they describe their style in three words? “Comfortable. Grungy. Playful.” What was the last thing they purchased? “A load of Björk merch after watching her play in Iceland around the eclipse.” Top of their autumn wish list? “A black Carhartt vintage jacket with a hood.” The books on their bedside table? The Shadow of the Object by Chloe Aridjis and Kelly Link’s short story collection Get in Trouble. And the soundtrack to their summer? “Phoebe Bridgers’s new album. On repeat.”

The next time we’ll see Corrin will be on the press trail for Dolly Alderton’s reimagining of . “I can’t say anything yet!” they quip when I probe them about the period-dressing potential of their red-carpet wear. “Ok, we’ve got some ideas,” they add about their “very easy and enjoyable” longstanding working relationship with Lambert. As a parting gift, Corrin say that they wish they read Jane Austen’s musing on “the chaos of love and life and loss” in their early twenties. “There’s so much I could have learned from it – it’s endlessly relatable.”
