The full Celine look was a near-identical recreation of one Princess Diana wore at an airport during a winter break in St Barts in 1995, right down to the cropped hair and sunglasses – plus, in Corrin’s case, an oversized Crash de Cartier handbag. It is perhaps no coincidence that the actor should return to Diana’s downtime wardrobe: these were the clothes that helped them to “humanise” the royal, and those in which Diana “felt most natural, most like herself”.

The other story here is that Celine’s jazz shoes are becoming the shoe of Venice – Maggie Gyllenhaal, president of the festival jury, wore them on the opening-night red carpet – if not the year. First shown on Michael Rider’s debut catwalk for the house, they arrived amid a perfect storm of ballet pumps and low-profile trainers, creating the ideal conditions for them to become one of the world’s hottest products.
