Blue denim might be fashion’s most enduring wardrobe staple, but this autumn, I’m developing a taste for something a little richer. Enter a sophisticated palette of espresso, mocha and chocolate-brown jeans, which offer all the versatility of black denim, but with a softer, more luxurious feel. The street-style set have already got the memo, of course, pairing their brown jeans – mostly of the wide-legged variety – with Penny Lane coats and oversized bombers. Below, discover how to wear autumn’s most appetising denim trend.
Forget the rules

Back in the early Noughties, we loved a fashion rule. Black and green should never be seen. A statement belt was essential for nipping in the waist. Black and brown make a frown. Thankfully, in 2026, we’re no longer beholden to the style diktats of yore. In fact, pairing coffee-coloured jeans with a black jacket is a failsafe way to ease into the trend.
Why stop at one coffee-coloured piece when you could have the whole wardrobe? Once you’ve developed a taste for brown denim, it’s only a matter of time before the shade makes its way into the rest of your outfits. Break things up with a touch of grey, or go all in on head-to-toe tones.
Don’t be afraid of texture

Autumn is the perfect time to experiment with texture (there’s little risk of overheating come November), and brown jeans provide the ideal backdrop for a statement coat or chunky knit. Whether you’re partial to a Penny Lane coat or have been dabbling in grandpa golf jumpers, let your denim do the grounding.
Layer up

Rather than wishing the cold weather away, embrace autumn layering. The warmth of a brown jean makes the perfect foundation for cosy coats, chunky knits and oversized scarves.
If in doubt, keep it classic

Sometimes, simplicity is best, and few combinations feel more autumn-ready than an oversized leather jacket and jeans. Opt for a bomber-style jacket in olive green or burgundy, both of which pair well with coffee-coloured denim.
