It’s been eight years since Frances Bean Cobain last walked a red carpet, but for her return, she didn’t stray too far from the beauty codes she knows best.

The 34-year-old artist and only daughter of Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love stepped out in Los Angeles for a special screening of , the forthcoming action-crime thriller on which she serves as an executive producer. Her look offered a distinctly grown-up take on grunge, familiar in its spirit but softened around the edges. Cobain wore her brunette-to-blonde balayage – once a much more high-octane bleached blonde – in super loose, barely-there waves, swept into a deep side parting. Her make-up was similarly understated and skin-forward: a fresh, dewy complexion was warmed with a subtle wash of brick-red blush, while a softly smoked brown eye and precisely lined brown-red lip brought just enough definition.

The clothes continued the same relaxed rhythm. Cobain layered an oversized chocolate-brown leather blazer over a distressed black graphic T-shirt, adding tiny black denim shorts and knee-high white boots.

Cobain was last pictured on the front row of the Moschino resort 2020 show back in 2019, and walked a red carpet in 2018. Back then, she dabbled in rose-pink hair and a bleach-ended bob, darker shapely brows, kohl eyeliner and lashings of mascara, and a glossy, cool-toned lip.

While contemporary make-up trends have oscillated from the minimalist clean girl to the maximalist side of Y2K, there’s something about grunge glam that just endures: luminous skin, moody, just-bitten lips and flushed cheeks will forever be iconic. For someone with perhaps the most famous grunge lineage of all, Frances Bean Cobain has never needed to labour the reference.
