The Secret To Finding The Perfect Wedding Guest Dress For Autumn
Summer is a classic season for weddings, with a higher likelihood of good weather and less chance of rain than other times of the year. But autumn has also become a popular period for ceremonies, beloved for slightly cooler forecasts, lower risk of heatwaves, and generally more attendee availability than July and August.

Another plus? Selecting an autumn wedding guest dress is somewhat easier than summer, since you don’t have to think so hard about fabrics and being too hot (unless you’re heading to a destination wedding, in which case the style brief varies significantly).

Given autumn is at the tail-end of the year, it can be tempting to avoid planning too far ahead. As someone who’s coming towards the end of a three-year wedding relay, working my way up and down the country, I have learned first hand that it pays to think about what you want to wear in advance – whatever the season you’re dressing for, and wherever the location (ceremonies on your doorstep can become an excuse to not prepare, but you don’t want to be running around Selfridges the night before, or having last-minute panics about your dry cleaner’s opening hours).
I certainly don’t subscribe to the idea that you should buy something new to every wedding you attend – my favourite Zimmermann dress has seen me through nearly ten weddings. After all, I usually feel my most confident when I’m wearing something that I know I’ll feel good in, rather than anything too impulsive. Another good thing about wearing the same dress again and again is that it has already passed the event test, so you won’t be surprised by creases that emerge 10 minutes after leaving the house.

Pay attention to the venue and the time of year, as I have found it can work to keep your colour scheme and print somewhat thematic. This can be an easy way to make sure you are in-keeping with the overall vibe of the wedding, and won’t stand out for all of the wrong reasons. For countryside celebrations, I’d consider bold hues, as they’ll look beautiful against the changing landscape, and more unusual than your typical cheery prints. One of the favourite wedding looks I wore on a cooler day was a deep red satin dress by Nanushka. And so, for autumn weddings I always consider an autumn leaf colour palette of orange, rust and burgundy.

Wearing black to a wedding is a much-contested subject, but it’s a failsafe shade for shopping director, Naomi Smart. “I love to wear black because it’s the easiest and quickest way to look slick. I’ve also got a lot in my wardrobe already so I don’t need to buy anything new,” she shares. “While we’re seeing black being adopted more, it’s still a relatively unworn colour for weddings and so there’s less of a chance of someone turning up in the same dress. I was pretty sure I’d be the only one wearing a black Rick Owens batwing maxi dress to a friend’s wedding in the Cotswolds, and I was proven right.”
Renting or borrowing from friends is a great way to try something new or outside of your comfort zone, however if you are buying a new dress, I would recommend investing in something that you can see yourself wearing for many years to come. For ’s Naomi Smart, that means sticking to fashion-forward black dresses that she can wear for last-minute work events or special birthday celebrations. Meanwhile, I stick to the failsafe silhouettes that make me feel my best – namely a cinched-in waist and flared skirt – so that I won’t be tugging at my hemline or feeling awkward while posing for photographs.

“I always think I’ll want to wear a slinky, curve-clinging dress when I attend a wedding, but when it comes to it, there’s always something that draws me back to something looser,” explains ’s shopping editor, Joy Montgomery, who’s found her silhouette sweet spot having attended endless weddings.
