Not so long ago, the idea of wearing flip-flops for anything other than the short journey between sun lounger and pool seemed unthinkable. (Why have your feet out in public?) But in the age of The Row’s £670 flops and Jonathan Bailey wearing them to movie premieres, flip-flops have become as essential to your wardrobe as, say, a white T-shirt or jeans.
Jennifer Lawrence – a woman who once made headlines for wearing flip-flops on the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival – is taking this a step further. At a Troye Sivan concert in New York this weekend, the actor wore a fuzzy pair from Valentino’s autumn/winter 2017 collection with Levi’s and a silk overcoat from The Row. It’s a reminder that, with a few temperature-appropriate tweaks, flip-flops needn’t be banished to the back of the wardrobe the second summer ends.
Despite being one of Hollywood’s most mainstream stars, Lawrence’s taste in shoes remains decidedly offbeat. Last week, she paired a prim and proper date-night look with glove-like flats. Then there’s her penchant for Haflingers – the garden-centre alternative to Birkenstocks – to say nothing of her non-shoes. If her latest look proves anything, it’s that with a little determination – and a few layers up top – flip-flops can be forever.
