The Prince and Princess of Wales are willing to attend a premiere only if the film in question celebrates the human spirit. Their occasional red-carpet outings have included 2009’s Tenacity on the Tasman, a documentary about a man’s attempt to circumnavigate the world in a rowboat; 2013’s Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, an adaptation of Nelson Mandela’s autobiography; and 2016’s A Street Cat Named Bob, about a street musician whose life changes when he takes in a stray cat. Or seemingly anything starring Tom Cruise.

It should come as little surprise, then, that Princess Catherine and Prince William were among the guests at the Odeon in Leicester Square this evening for the world premiere of . The evening was held as part of the Royal Film Performance, the Film and TV Charity’s flagship fundraiser, which brings senior royals to major premieres to raise money for those working behind the scenes in the industry. Kate arrived in a purple chiffon gown with a plunging neckline, pleated bodice and billowing sleeves, paired with the Queen Mother’s heart-shaped amethyst pendant necklace, previously worn by Queen Camilla to the premiere of in 2012. It was a departure from the pared-back looks Kate tends to deploy at premieres – the two-tone Roland Mouret stretch-cady gown she wore to in 2022, for example, or the white crochet Self-Portrait dress she chose for A Street Cat Named Bob – and more in keeping with the pronounced glamour of her Royal Variety Performance appearances.

As for what the royal couple will be witnessing inside the cinema? A comedy, apparently, in which a prosthetic-heavy Cruise plays an oil tycoon whose extreme drilling operations unleash an ecological disaster, sending him on an absurd mission to clean up the mess and win back public affection. Hmmm… A powerful institution trying to repair its reputation after misconduct? Sounds like something the future king and queen can really lose themselves in.
