As always, London certainly has no shortage of traditional stuff to see and do this festive season, from ice rinks and carol concerts to pantos, lights displays and markets. However, if you’re looking for something a little more ‘alternative’ – aside from checking out our guide to non-tradish attractions – head over to the Walthamstow Wetlands for a brand-new, nature-inspired Christmas experience.
The city’s largest urban nature reserve is launching Winter at the Wetlands, a family-friendly attraction combining festive fun with an opportunity to discover the area’s local wildlife.
At the centre of the festive attraction is ‘Operation Redwing’, a 45-minute experience featuring professional actors and a Santa’s eco-grotto. Kids will join two navigators called Norm and Nesbit in a mission to save Christmas, in the process learning about animal migration, navigation and winter survival. They’ll get to design a ‘super sleigh’ and, eventually, meet Santa himself.

Ticket prices start from £40 (for an adult and child), with additional children for £23 and adults for £20. Each ticket includes a gift per child, and profits go towards supporting the London Wildlife Trust.
Winter at the Wetlands is open December 5-23 and you can buy tickets here.
Did you see that posh London hotel Claridge’s is getting a Christmas treehouse designed by Dame Anya Hindmarch?
