I love being from and dressing like I live in London, but Paris is the most stylish place in the world. There is a reverence for clothes here, in a city where textiles are taken as seriously as urban planning, an understanding that good self-presentation is akin to being well-read. You see it in the teenager carrying her first Gérard Darel 24h bag in the crook of her elbow, and in her mum wearing a tweed cardigan jacket – two quintessentially French rites of passage, pieces bought to last and be passed down. And while, yes, most people dress in Zara or Shein, as they do everywhere else, there is a higher concentration of aesthetes here than anywhere else… helped, I’m sure, by all the British creatives who have relocated since Brexit. The city’s flair for dressing becomes particularly evident during fashion week, when street-style photographers stationed outside show venues so often turn their lenses towards passing civilians instead of the guests filing in and out of them.
