There’s an episode of in which Carrie ditches the avoidant-attachment nightmare that is Big and the wet blanket that is Aidan to embark on an alternative journey as a politician’s girlfriend, switching up her wardrobe of Galliano slip dresses for retro shades and Jackie O-inspired trench coats. I can only assume that this fictional wardrobe phase was on Selena Gomez’s moodboard as she got dressed for the Fast Company Innovation Festival in New York on Thursday night.

Over the years, we’ve watched the star go from blue-haired Disney tween to bona fide beauty mogul before our very eyes. Though her image has undeniably evolved, Selena has stayed largely true to her Old Hollywood sensibilities in recent years, favouring bedazzled Schiaparelli and off-the-shoulder Chanel and leaving the denim capris and waistcoats of her child star past firmly in the rear view. But while Marilyn Monroe-inspired glamour has long been part of her repertoire, this latest look felt far more Jackie.
Pairing a demure midi skirt with a coordinating cream funnel neck and Carolyn Bessette Kennedy-esque sunglasses, Selena finished the look with a classic pair of heels that also matched her outfit and a ladylike handbag in the same shade. Clearly, Gomez is well placed in the wardrobe department should she – or husband Benny Blanco – ever decide to pivot into politics. But if not, it’s also a very fitting look for a Rare Beauty CEO.
