There are certain pleasures only a pop star’s wardrobe can provide. Dua Lipa, for one, rarely misses an opportunity to dress like one, whether she’s marrying in a dress made from 480,000 Chanel beads, flitting between holiday destinations in butterfly bralettes or taking to the stage in cut-out Mugler bodysuits.

True to form, Dua took a break from her seemingly endless this weekend to join Shakira onstage at the Colombian singer’s Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour residency in Madrid, where their duet doubled as an unintentional sequin-off. Dua wore a glittering halterneck cut-out dress by Mônot with Bulgari’s equally dazzling Serpenti Viper earrings, while Shakira opted for a low-cut, bell-bottom jumpsuit of twinkling red paillettes.

Together, they delivered on a time-honoured pop promise: something good to sing along to and something fabulous to look at. In the tradition of Cher’s Bob Mackie bodysuits, both understand the appeal of a stage wardrobe, where dressing up is as much a part of the entertainment as the music. As the rest of us contemplate jeans and jumpers, consider this a welcome dose of escapism.
