The great British high street has been through the wringer over the last decade, but Japanese import Uniqlo has remained the gold standard when it comes to utilitarian design at accessible prices. From perfectly executed white tees to throw-everything-in sling bags (Uniqlo’s ubiquitous bag was declared Lyst’s hottest product back in 2023), the brand repped functional fashion long before gorpcore was part of the cultural conversation.
Far from being a one-dimensional “staples and socks” shop, Uniqlo has earned a reputation as an under-the-radar fashion editor favourite. The men’s section, in particular, is pillaged by editors for its well-made pieces. On any given day in the office, you’ll find a member of the team wearing one of the retailer’s knits or basics (the tees are a common sighting), or a pair of Uniqlo jeans, another well-loved piece.
Uniqlo’s longstanding collaboration with Jonathan Anderson has also proved to be a global hit, allowing shoppers to get a piece of the Dior creative director’s designs at a high-street friendly price point. Elsewhere, the Uniqlo U line has delivered a steady stream of cult products since its inception a decade ago. The offshoot recently released its final collection headed up by Christopher Lemaire and Sarah-Linh Tran, featuring barrel-leg trousers, outerwear, and a new, coated-canvas take on the popular drawstring bag.
