I could have replaced this year’s Venice Film Festival best-dressed list with a single ode to John Malkovich at the premiere of Martin McDonagh’s , had my colleague Liam Hess not already written it. “It’s my favourite look of the festival so far,” he said of Malkovich’s loose-fitting Dior suit and off-white silk shirt, its frilled collar resembling an Elizabethan neck ruff. “Not only because it reminds me a little of those fabulous lace jabots he wore in , but also because it’s such a clear expression of Malkovich’s very specific, and brilliantly idiosyncratic, eye for style… Think Shakespeare, if he slayed.”

Similar praise could be lavished on Emma Corrin, who arrived at Marco Polo in a superlative all-white airport look courtesy of Celine, discovered that their luggage had gone missing and still made it to Cartier’s dinner at the Gritti Palace in a whisper of black satin and lace by Tom Ford’s Haider Ackermann. Of all the designers making a play for Venice, it was Ackermann who won out, really, also dressing Patrick Schwarzenegger in Dalmatian-print collared shirts and pill-box red double-breasted jackets, and Amal Clooney in bodycon column gowns and evil-b**** heels.
