You could be forgiven for assuming that some of autumn/winter 2026’s biggest trends had been lifted from the wardrobe of a septuagenarian Rotary Club member – the driving loafers, the practical anoraks, the sturdy cord trousers, and, the : the golf jumper. Of course, “golf jumper” is a loose term (we imagine those who actually play the sport might quibble over our definition), but essentially, it’s the sort of jumper that would appear if you searched for “golfer costume” on Google – usually accompanied by a flat cap, knee-high socks and a pair of printed trousers.
Originally derived from the tartan of Clan Campbell of Argyll in western Scotland, the Argyle print was popularised by the British brand Pringle in the early 20th century and, thanks to the Duke Of Windsor, became popular throughout the 1920s. Though it may have become synonymous with a certain eccentric geography teacher aesthetic in the intervening years, we saw the classic intarsia knit start to creep its way back into the fashion conversation at the autumn/winter 2022 shows via the agenda-setting designs of Miu Miu, before gathering momentum through 2023 and into 2024. By the time the spring/summer 2026 shows rolled around, Argyle knitwear had well and truly secured its place in the mainstream, as evidenced by the many diamond-pattern jumpers that appeared in the street-style galleries from that season.
While I’d like to say that the autumn/winter 2026 collections of Kallmeyer, Sstein and Khaite were a key driving force behind Argyle’s ongoing popularity, the reality is that a certain Claudia Winkleman presenting a certain TV show has probably done more for Argyle’s PR than all of the above put together. In fact, Winkleman’s outfits in have garnered almost as much attention as the show itself (my friend recently confessed to Googling her outfits during each episode), with her stylist Sinead McKeefry spending the last four seasons perfecting that haute-Highlands mood. Alongside the combat boots, fuzzy coats, and tartan fabrics, Argyle has become a staple in many of Winkleman’s looks.

But really, the beauty of the Argyle knit is that it doesn’t need a much thought when it comes to styling. In fact, this staple is best treated simply: with a pair of straight-leg jeans and a boxy blazer à la British ’s Chioma Nnadi; with black leggings, leather jackets and knee-high riding boots; or, if you want to channel your inner Winkleman, a pleated kilt skirt and chunky boots. Who knows… you might find that your grandpa wants to borrow your &Daughter Ava Argyle knitwear next time you see him.
