When it comes to the great British high-street, it is safe to say that the autumn/winter collections are unrivalled. Cotton dresses, leather sandals and beach-ready basics are all well and good, but a quick scroll through the autumn new arrivals sections of Cos, Whistles and M&S (among others) will confirm that high-quality cashmere, sturdy coats and downpour-proof boots are where their strengths lie.
Shop standout high-street buys:
As always, the secret to high-street shopping lies in the edit – separating the investment-worthy buys from the merely “meh”. This is where we come in. Ever since the autumn collections started dropping in September, the Shopping team have been making mental notes of the best buys: from Cos’s longline double-breasted coat and ’90s-coded straight-leg jeans, to M&S’s professorial cord trousers and Free People’s Y2K military jacket.
Our top tip for shopping the high street? Keep an eye on fabric composition. For example, Uniqlo’s 100 per cent cashmere is known as a fashion editor favourite that comes in 10 different colourways, and M&S’s and Arket’s straight-leg jeans are both made from 100 per cent cotton. Elsewhere, Whistles’s leather offering has long been considered a gold-standard when it comes to quality – I have a few leather jackets from the brand that I’ve been wearing every year for almost a decade now. Clearly it pays (in every sense) to pay attention to the details.
