It’s that time of year again, when your wardrobe may be dictated less by aesthetics, more by the fear of getting caught in a downpour. We say: consider finding a coat that ticks both of those boxes. When it comes to weatherproofing your wardrobe while still looking good, one staple has been going strong for more than a century now: the Burberry trench. As demonstrated by the Princess of Wales, who chose to wear hers for a visit to a blustery Isle of Bute on 17 September, which just so happens to be day one of London Fashion Week.

Dressed for autumn on the Scottish isle, Kate styled her classic trench with a pair of brown skinny jeans and Chelsea boots. Royal outfit-watchers will also recognise the Princess’s favourite baker boy hat, which she previously wore for a similarly outdoorsy excursion with the Scouts in the Lake District last year.

Kate has always been a champion of London fashion, often wearing Edeline Lee tailoring or Emilia Wickstead dresses for royal engagements. And while she may not actually be at London Fashion Week, her choice of outfit felt especially fitting on the day the curtain lifted on The Burberry Trench: Crafting an Icon, a considered display at the V&A charting the trench’s journey from functional military outerwear to bona fide fashion classic, beloved by everyone from Audrey Hepburn to Rihanna, as well as, of course, the Princess of Wales herself.
