“Everyone thinks that I’m cool and collected, but I am chaos,” British ’s October cover star Wunmi Mosaku lets slip with a laugh. Still, there’s nothing chaotic about her remarkably straightforward beauty routine: a few dabs of concealer here, a wash of bronzer there, a swipe of mascara, and done! So, what’s the secret behind her permanent – and undeniable – glow? A skincare routine packed with Black women-owned beauty brands that emphasise botanical-backed, science-driven formulations.

Among her favourites: Shea Radiance’s Renewing Cleanser and Vitamin C Face Oil, S’Able Labs’s Black Seed Toner, and Uzo’s Stem Cell Moisturiser. For Mosaku, who was raised on cocoa butter, Vaseline and African black soap by her “au naturel” mum, and who’s currently taking a course in herbalism, what sets these products apart is their organic ingredients, from baobab oil to calendula. “For me personally, I feel like I’m very much drawn towards the natural – just everything being more natural and holistic,” she explains. “I played Annie [in ] and she was a herbalist, and I’ve been doing a herbalism course, so I’ve been learning about all these herbs that are good for your skin, your digestion, your immune system…”

The Oscar nominee even makes her own homemade body butter, which unfortunately is “not for sale”, she says. But Mosaku is willing to share her recipe for her daily go-to lotion, which she remakes every couple of months. On the ingredients list? Shea butter straight from Ghana, coconut oil, cocoa butter, sweet almond oil and whatever essence takes her fancy, be it lavender or orange.
